At Sudu, we know that successful foster care starts with well-prepared parents. Taking in a child who has been displaced or orphaned can be a challenging transition, both for the child and the family. That’s why Sudu offers a thorough training program that equips families with the tools, knowledge, and emotional intelligence needed to foster children effectively. Our goal is to ensure not only that children find homes but that those homes are supportive, loving environments where they can thrive.

A Holistic Approach to Foster Training
Our training program isn’t just about learning the basics of childcare. It is a comprehensive approach that focuses on the social-emotional development of the child, how to build genuine family bonds, and how to handle challenges that may arise as the child integrates into the home.
Initial Training: Setting Families Up for Success
Before a child is placed, foster parents undergo an intensive initial training program that covers crucial topics such as:
- Supporting Your Child’s Education: How to help foster children succeed in school despite potential setbacks from their past.
- Creating a Sense of Belonging: Ensuring that the child feels loved and integrated into the family unit.
- Low-Cost Activities for Family Bonding: Simple, free, or low-cost ways to engage the child and other siblings in meaningful activities around the home and community.
- Nurturing Emotional Health: Understanding trauma and helping the child build self-esteem and trust in a new family environment.
Ongoing Training: Building Lifelong Parenting Skills
Sudu’s commitment to foster parents extends far beyond the initial training. We provide quarterly training sessions during the first year of placement to ensure that parents continue to develop their skills and confidence. These sessions cover advanced topics such as:

- Tracking Developmental Milestones: How to recognize whether a child is meeting important developmental benchmarks, and what steps to take if they are not.
- Addressing Behavioral and Emotional Challenges: Tools and strategies to help parents manage the emotional impact of trauma on their child and foster healthy coping mechanisms.
- Long-Term Family Integration: Preparing the family for the ongoing journey of raising a foster child, including strategies to maintain strong emotional connections as the child grows.
Institutional Training for Caregivers
In addition to our family training programs, we also offer training for childcare institutions. This ensures that caregivers at orphanages and other facilities are equipped with the skills they need to provide high-quality care for children before they are placed with families.
